Anyone feeling Game of Thrones withdrawal yet? Well, instead of just fixating on every little bit of show news you can find, here’s a nice tutorial for more Thrones hair!
In this video I show you how to do the two braided hairstyles Daenerys wore in Qarth way back in season 2. In terms of her character, these are interesting hairstyles because they visually communicate her conflict between trusting this comfortable and cosmopolitan environment, much like she once knew back in Volantis, and being wary and defensive of her precarious position as the world’s only dragon owner. Thus the hairstyles are mostly light, smooth, and primarily cosmetic, but with aspects of the tightly bound and battle-ready Dothraki aesthetic still present.
In terms of real world wearability, these braids are relatively quick to do. They also fit in well with the current boho braiding trends while still maintaining a sense of fantasy and individuality.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy – Moderate
Hair Length: at least collar bone length
Materials: small hair elastics
Skills needed: transverse four strand braid, English braid
Time cost: 5-20 minutes
ideal hairtype: straight or wavy
Style 1 – basic Qarth braids, what she’s wearing when her dragons are stolen
Step 1) Grab a chunk of hair from the corner of your forehead and turn it into a transverse/one direction four strand braid. Check out this pictorial for information on how to do that braid.
Step 2) Make another transverse four strand braid at the other corner of your forehead.
Step 3) Bring them together at your crown, undo the braiding below this point in the braids, and trade two strands from one braid with two strands from the other braid.
Step 4) Finish the braids to the ends again with these new traded strands.
Step 5) Tie the tails of the braids together around neck height with a small elastic.
Step 1) Make two normal English braids at either corner of your forehead.
Step 2) Bring them together at the back of your head and merge them into one braid running down the back of your head.
Step 3) Make two more braids with the hair along your hairline from either side of your head.
Step 4) Merge those braids together at the back as well.
Step 5) Finally, tie the tails of those braids together at neck height with a small elastic.
