This past summer (that’s right, summer’s pretty much over!! *sad face*) on my Instagram page, I embarked on a project to do one hairstyle from every episode of Vikings. I’ve done this before with Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, and even though it’s a lot of work, at the end I feel a lot more connected with the characters and I gain a lot of insight in braiding technique and inspiration.

At the end of it all, I asked my followers on IG and facebook to choose which style they would most like a tutorial for, and this one was the winner!

It was pretty distinctive in the show (episode 4, season 3), and I knew I just had to make a tutorial eventually right when I saw it. It features a really tall French braid down the middle of the head, with smaller French braids on the side blending into the larger one in the back.

That’s simple enough form-wise, but what makes this tutorial interesting is that I show you a tricky way to get all that volume if you don’t want to tease your hair. The show uses teasing, but not everyone wants to risk the hair damage (and even then, teasing fine hair doesn’t always get the amount of volume you want). So here’s a hair-safe alternative using a cut up hair donut. Plus, you can change the amount of volume just by changing the size of the donut. So check out the instruction below to learn it, or watch the full video!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Hair Length: at least bra strap length (BSL)
Materials: foam hair donut, bobbypins, small elastics (hair extensions optional)
Skills needed: French braid
Time cost: 20-50 minutes
ideal hairtype: straight or wavy

Step 1) Divide your hair into three sections from front to back so you have two side divisions and one larger on on top and in back of your head.

Step 2) French braid the two side sections.

Step 3) Part the big section down the very center.

Step 4) Get a hair donut, cut it so it becomes a tube, and pin that tube to your head along your center part (optionally cover it with hair extensions if it doesn’t quite match your hair color).

Step 5) French braid the rest of your hair over the top of the tube, adding in the tails from the smaller French braids at the center of the back of your head.

Step 6) When there’s no more hair to add in, pull out the small braid tails and make an uneven braid with these as two of the strands and the rest of your hair as a large third strand.

Step 7) At the ends of the small braids, tie them together with a small elastic and tuck into the larger section of hair to hide them.
