Sansa really came into her own as Lady of Winterfell in season 7 of Game of Thrones. For her entire character arch, she jumped from one identity to another as she tried to live in the dangerous political world of Westeros, and her hairstyles have always reflected that through different regional and personal motifs. For instance, the stuffy hair rolls in season 2 that were an attempt to blend into the King’s Landing scene, or the season 3 rope twists that mimicked Margaery’s look. This season though, the statement her hair makes is “powerful Northern woman,” an exciting position to see Sansa finally arrive at. So here is a tutorial to celebrate that show development by teaching you how to get the same look!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Hair Length: at least armpit length

Materials: small hair elastics, bobby pins

Skills needed: lace braid, rope braid

Time cost: 15-30 minutes

Ideal hair type: straight or wavy

Step 1) Make two small lace braids on either side of your head, starting at the corners of your forehead and ending at the back of the head. These should slope downward a little bit.

Step 2) Make a bun with these braids at the upper back of your head.

Step 3) With the rest of your hair in front of your ears, make a rope braid on either side of your head.

Step 4) Wrap these rope braids over the top and around the outside of the bun, pinning in place with bobby pins. Make sure all your hair elastics and pins are hidden so that you only see braided hair.

And that’s it! Simple, but elegant – the Northern way.
