Its seems like we still don’t have a return date for Vikings season 4B, but at least we have a new trailer. From this, it’s evident that the next installment is going to be very epic, so we need to be prepared with some battle ready hairstyles!

In the last few aired episodes of season 4, Torvi follows the raiding party to Paris and subsequently becomes a fighter as well. Torvi always has very eye-catching and artistic hair, and her braids during this transition are no exception. If you’re a ponytail fan, or simply can’t get enough of Viking hair, check out the video below to learn how to do these two different looks!

Style 1: Rope-Braided Ponytail

Difficulty: Easy
Hair Length: at least armpit length
Materials: small hair elastics, bobby pin
Skills needed: Rope braid
Time cost: 25-50 minutes
ideal hair type: straight or wavy

This first style is from the episode in which the Vikings are hauling their boats up the cliff to travel overland. Torvi hasn’t had her transitive moment yet which empowers her to join the battle, so her hair in this episode is built around soft, draped rope braid elements. To accomplish this look:

  1. Divide off a section of hair at the top front of your head. Turn this hair into two rope braids. Then rope braid these into an even bigger rope braid (technically called a Hawser braid).
  2. Make three more rope braids on one side of your head. Number one should start right next to the top section you braided, still along the hair line. Number two should start right behind this. And number three should start next to number one, farther down the side of your head and along the hairline.
  3. Make three more rope braids on the other side of your head, in the same positions.
  4. Clip or tie your six side braids out of the way for now, and gather up the rest of your hair into a high ponytail (including the Hawser braid). Tie with a secure hair tie, and then wrap the Hawser braid around this hair tie to hide it. Pin the end of the braid underneath the wrapping with a bobby pin or two.
  5. Tie the side rope braids together at the back of your head, right underneath your ponytail.
  6. Add a few accent braids to your ponytail. Torvi has accent braids that vary in size, and some of them even have a braid within a braid, acting as one of the strands.

Style 2: Torvi’s Shieldmaiden Ponytail

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Hair Length: at least armpit length
Materials: small hair elastics, hair cuff, hair beads
Skills needed: French braid
Time cost: 25-50 minutes
ideal hair type: straight or wavy

Keeping with the theme, Torvi still wears an accented ponytail here, but the braids along her head are a lot more structured and intense. Plus, she adds some bling!

  1. Make three French braids on the top of your head, running from your forehead to your crown (upper back of your head). Finish these braids normally to the ends.
  2. Flip your head over, and make another larger French braid running up the back of your head, starting at the nape of your neck and ending just behind where the top French braids ended. Also finish this braid to the ends.
  3. Gather up everything into a high ponytail. Since Torvi has some decoration here, I’m using a ponytail elastic attached to a gold cuff.
  4. Make more accent braids. In this style, all of the accent braids have at least one smaller braid incorporated. This can take up a lot of hair, so don’t be shy in using hair extensions if you have them (I did).
  5. Finally, Torvi has some long copper hair beads threaded onto these accent braids. Include some on your hair as well for the full effect.

Those styles should give you a few new Vikings hair options to help tide you over until the show returns! And as you probably know, there are tons more Torvi styles to try besides these, so stay tuned and I’ll make tutorials for those as well in the near future!

Happy styling!
