Got a multi-style video for you today! This tutorial, up just in time for the return of Vikings season 4, features all the hairstyles of Ragnar’s now-adult sons – Bjorn, Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Ivar. There’s a range of hair lengths, styles, and difficulties to choose from among the Ragnarsons, so everyone should be able to find a Vikings look that works for them! Check out the instructions for each style below, or watch the full tutorial here.

Ubbe

Let’s start with the easiest style and move up from there. Ubbe is the oldest Ragnarson by Aslaug, and has a braided ponytail look that’s very reminiscent of Ragnar in Season 1. This would work well for you if you have long hair. Or, if your hair is short on top like Ubbe’s, you can buy some clip in hair extensions to attach to the back for the ponytail.

Difficulty: Easy
Hair Length: at least collar bone length
Materials: large hair elastics
Skills needed: English braid
Time cost: 15-25 minutes
ideal hair type: straight or wavy

Step 1) Tie your hair into a high ponytail.

Step 2) Split this ponytail into four or five chunks, and English braid each chunk. (That’s just the formal name for a three strand braid).

Step 3) Tie the braids together with more large hair bands, spaced apart by a couple inches. Keep adding more hair ties until there’s no more room on the braid tail.

Ivar & Bjorn

Ivar and Bjorn have the same style on top of the head, with the only difference being the length of the ponytail behind them, so I’m grouping both of them together here. Again, this twist look is like what Ragnar wore in Season 2. Following in dad’s footsteps!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Hair Length: at least shoulder length
Materials: large hair elastic, leather/suede cord
Skills needed: none
Time cost: 10-30 minutes
ideal hair type: straight or wavy

Step 1) Separate off a panel of hair on top of your head. Divide this hair into five sections running front to back.

Step 2) Twist up these sections tightly. Adding some teasing and texture spray helps hold these twists in place more.

Step 3) Gather these twists and the rest of your hair into a high ponytail and tie with a large hair band.

Step 4) If you’re doing Ivar’s short style, you’re now done. If you’re doing Bjorn’s long style, you should now grab a length of leather or suede cord that is 4x the length of your ponytail. Wrap the midpoint of the cord around your ponytail holder, and then wrap the rest of the lengths of cord around the length of the ponytail. When you reach the ends of the cord, tie them together to hold everything in place.

Sigurd

Sigurd’s Vikings hair involves lots of French braids! So if you like the braided look, there’s lots of detail in this style that you’ll love.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Hair Length: at least shoulder length
Materials: small hair elastics
Skills needed: French braid
Time cost: 20-30 minutes
ideal hair type: straight or wavy

Step 1) French braid the hair on top of your head, going front the back. Braid this hair normally to the ends when you’ve added in all the hair from on top.

Step 2) Also French braid the hair on the sides of your head, going from your front hair line straight back. Stop adding in new hair when the braid reaches past your ears. Do this on both sides of your head.

Step 3) Gather a small amount of hair at your crown on the right side of the top French braid, and English braid it to the ends. Also make a small braid like this with some hair on the left side of the top braid.

Step 4) Pancake out the braids a little to make them look larger and more organic.

Hvitserk

Finally, we have Hvitserk’s braided medley of hair. If you’re feeling adventurous with your hairstyling, this is the Vikings style for you!

Difficulty: Moderate
Hair Length: at least collar bone length
Materials: small hair elastics, large hair elastics
Skills needed: French braid
Time cost: 15-40 minutes
ideal hair type: straight or wavy

Step 1) Divide the hair on top of your head down the middle, and create two French braids on top of your head running front to back.

Step 2) On the side of your head, make a twist running front to back. This should be halfway up the side of your head. Make another twist on the other side of your head as well.

Step 3) Gather the twists and the French braids together at the back of your head, and tie together here in a half ponytail.

Step 4) Gather the rest of the hair on the lower side of your head behind your ear, and English braid to the ends. Repeat on the other side of your head.

Step 5) Now tie all your hair, including these new English braids and the half ponytail, into a large low ponytail at the nape of your neck.
